David Bridwell (MRN)

I am a Research Scientist at the Mind Research Network in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I am interested in understanding the cortical dynamics that may relate/contribute to fluid interpersonal communication. Communication is one of the most fundamental and important skills for maintaining interpersonal relationships, and deficits in interpersonal relationships are a defining feature of many clinical disorders. Our understanding of these complex cognitive processes is incomplete since research has primarily focused on an individual in a constrained environment. These constrained settings are limited, since neural responses supporting complex interpersonal interactions appear fundamentally distinct from responses which support passive observation of social cues or observations of simpler stimuli.

The cortical dynamics supporting verbal communication may be captured in part by examining the correspondence between electroencephalography (EEG) and verbal speech signals directly, each fluctuating with similar frequencies. Cortical responses to speech signals are directly interpretable--greater entrainment indicates a greater cortical sensitivity to the input stimuli, which likely facilitates many features of verbal communication. These findings will provide important neural markers to support the social communicative construct outlined by the NIH RDoC, and will reveal how cortical dynamics support the range of social skills that emerge within a population of healthy individuals and clinical patients.

New Paper in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience

My latest paper combines my two favorite hobbies: science and music! We showed that brain responses to individual guitar notes were modulated by musical context (key and repetition). Individuals neural sensitivity to musical patters might be related to their sensitivity to other complex processes, such as language. (Updated 02.15.2017)
